The first members of the ensemble were students of the Dzherelo Drama Studio in Edmonton, Alberta. Their participation in performances of speech and song led them to develop a keen interest in Ukrainian folk music. Thus, the Ruta Musical Folk Ensemble was founded in 2012, under the sponsorship of the Ukrainian Women’s Organization in Edmonton.

Ruta's repertoire consists of songs from all regions of Ukraine, however, most of their songs are from Western Ukraine, Lemkivshchyna, and Bukovyna. Many of the songs performed are more than hundred years old.

Ruta performs at various celebrations, both in the community and at international festivals.

Singing in a simple village voice, wearing authentic costumes and jewelry, playing on traditional instruments, we popularize our culture and show the world who we are as Ukrainians.
